Writing the “Perfect” Song

I wrote the following entry on April 24, 2008.  I came across it going through some of my old stuff and I realized my viewpoint on songwriting is still very similar.

For a long time I have been wondering whether the songs I write influence the way I live, or if the way I live influences my songs.  On my way home from work today, I was thinking about it and I may have figured it out.  The answer was obvious but I had never thought about it before.  I believe they influence each other.

Acoustic Piano With Songwriting LyricsI think I have written more songs than the amount of songs I have played that weren’t written by me.  I always admire when I hear someone sitting around for an hour playing songs that everyone in the room knows and can sing along to.  Hopefully, one day I will be able to do that.  I have learned a few song covers, but most of my time with music has been spent trying to clear my head, or finding out there is nothing in me to write (through tedious attempts to come up with something better than whatever my best song happened to be at the time).  I used to think there was a perfect sound that could be found: one better than the rest of them.  That was a dumb thought.  If perfection even exists, I believe it is in the moment.  A perfect sound is when you hear something and you would rather be hearing that than anything else.  Some sounds are perfect for some people and not for others.  If you have a decrease of interest in a song, it loses its perfection from your perspective.  There is an infinite number of sounds and not just one can be perfect.

To me, my writing is kind of like some sort of journal.  A lot of my songs have been influenced by events in my life and my beliefs.  Also, some songs I have written have influenced my decisions and beliefs.  Often, a song will be influenced by something I believe or something I feel, and through the process of writing the song my beliefs and feelings on the subject will strengthen.  Sometimes, my outlook will even change altogether.
